Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board was set up in August, 1986 under the provisions of "Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1986" and repealed in August 1988 as "Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1988". The main objective of the act was to provide better management and governance of the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and its endowments including the appurtenant lands and buildings. This Shrine is one of the most revered Shrines in the country.

The administration, management and governance of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and the Shrine Fund shall vest in a Board comprising of Chairman and not more than ten members. The composition of the Board shall be as follows:

The Governor of the State of Jammu and Kashmir shall be the ex-officio Chairman of the Board, and if the Governor be not a Hindu, then he may nominate an eminent person professing Hindu religion and qualified to be a member.

Nine persons to be nominated by the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in the following manner:

	Two persons who, in the opinion of the Governor, have distinguished themselves in the service of Hindu religion or culture.
	Two women, who in the opinion of the Governor have distinguished themselves in the service of the Hindu religion, culture or social work, especially in regard to advancement of women.
	Three persons out of the persons, who have distinguished themselves in the administration, legal affairs or financial matters.
	Two eminent Hindus of the State of Jammu and Kashmir

The Board discharges the duties assigned to it through the Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Executive Officer is further assisted by the Addl. Chief Executive Officer and various Functional Heads.

Sh. N. N. Vohra, the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir is currently the Chairman of the Board. The Present Chief Executive Officer is Sh. B. B. Vyas, IAS and Sh. Manoj Dwivedi, IAS is the present Addl. Chief Executive Officer
